The FOOD!!!
Nothing much happening today, just chugging down the coastline to get to Nuuk where we will disembark tomorrow, which will involve some fairly complex logistics. Then we'll have a quick city bus tour and a museum visit, followed by the charter flight to Keflavík, a night at the Marriott, and a flight home on Wednesday. There was a chance for Zodiac cruising today, but it was 41F and raining slightly, so we abstained.
Luckily, we've been able to have things like yogurt and muesli, or fruit and granola for breakfast, and we've mostly gone to the lighter-fare restaurant for lunch as well. But it will be good to get back to a more rational way of eating in a few days!
So since we've kinda run out of icebergs, maybe it's time to show you the amazing food we were served. Yeah, yeah, it's a cruise ship, of course there was amazing food. Let me remind you that this is also a scientific expedition ship, and I'm pretty sure this is not standard expedition fare.
The food on the ship has been far above that on any other cruise ship we've been on, plus they go to a lot of effort to reduce food waste. There was a buffet the first night, and one other, but ordinarily you pre-order your evening meal. Just making this minor change has cut back waste by 25%.
There are typically one appetizer and/or soup, daily specials of meat, fish, and vegetarian entrees, plus you can always choose ribeye, grilled chicken, fresh pasta (this changes daily), and either mixed greens or Caesar salad (with or without anchovies).
But since we have finally run out of icebergs, here's a look at the food! Unfortunately, Sheila didn't think to take pics of the menus, and we have no idea what most of it is, but it's all so artistic we hope you won't mind.
This was in our cabin to greet us on the first day.
Assorted chocolates.
A selection from the first night buffet--lamb, potatoes au gratin, roast chicken, roasted veggies
Tupaia, on the 8th deck, serves a lighter breakfast and lunch.
Fish of the day and citrus salad is a daily item.
Lamb chops, roasted broccolini, mashed sweet potato?
One of many fabulous desserts
Afternoon tea dessert buffet
Ditto
No idea. Pork loin? with asparagus and carrot
Fish of the day, glazed carrots, plus ???
Dessert!
OK, when they say there will be asparagus, maybe more than two?
Gonna guess flank steak, pureed sweet potatoes, zucchini, caramelized onions
Fresh pasta of the day
Dessert!
Another dessert, two views...
Seriously, a mid-afternoon donut buffet??
"Apple pie"
I seem to have mostly taken pics of desserts! This one from 3 angles....
Lars didn't always think one dessert was enough.
Not if mango sorbet was involved!
And then they put more treats in your room!
I mean....really??
Most of the staff is Philippino, so there was a special Philippino buffet.
Lamb shank, zucchini, mashed celeriac root
If you don't care for the daily entrees, you can get a Caesar salad with grilled chicken
This was called Mexican Stew. Looks a lot like chili.
For the last day, a mid-afternoon cheese/charcuterie buffet
Fairly typical dinner menu
We both went with the French Onion Soup and Fillet Mignon
Dessert was a build-your-own concoction out of rum-soaked flaming banana, salted caramel sauce, chocolate sauce, whipped cream, various candied nuts, and 3 flavors of ice cream.
